Academic Field Day Update

Dear Veritas Parents,

In the early days of Veritas at the first Athletic Field Day, it turned out that the field day was about to be ruined by a rainy day. Mr. Ellison and the teachers were not about to let such a silly thing like a little or even a lot of rain spoil the day so they each took a few teams to their room, devised a game that was more academically than athletically oriented and which could be played indoors and thus was born Academic Field Day. The day was such a success that it quickly became part of the tradition at Veritas. We are celebrating the 10th Academic Field Day on Friday, February 14th.

Just as with the first Academic Field Day, the students will be divided into teams and compete in spirited and academic events such as History Jeopardy, Geography Bee, Dodge-Boggle, and Linguistravaganza (which is an academic feat just trying to pronounce it).

While Academic Field Day is a break from the routine, it is not a break from school and attendance and participation is required of all students. The school day will begin at the usual time and students will report to their first period class for attendance. They will then go to the gym for the opening ceremonies. After a fun-filled day, all of the teams will again meet in the gym for the closing assembly. The students will be released early at 2:00pm.

There are a few areas in which Academic Field Day is different that Athletic Field day and these items are important to note:

  • Uniform for Academic Field Day is the regular school uniform.
  • Lunch and snacks are not provided for the students as they are with Athletic Field Day. Students will have lunch in the cafeteria and courtyard as they usually do and even though Field Day is on a Friday Jamba Juices will not be served and the snack bar will not be open.
  • As the events for Academic Field Day do not involve competitive field sports as with Athletic Field Day, no permission slip is required.
Academic Field Day provides an opportunity for students to work with teams of students from all grades in academically challenging, enjoyable, and spirited events in an environment of friendly competition. It is one of the highlights of the academic year.

Thank you, as always, for your wonderful support.
